Carpenter of Wickwire is a son of Prince of Malpas, the creation of master breeder J.E. Kerr whose Harviestoun herd in Scotland traced back to the Ballindalloch origins of the Angus breed. When James Lingle set out to create the Wye heard in the 1950s he traveled to Scotland because he believed that Scottish breeders were "the best husbandmen in the world. They were dedicated people who passed a herd from father to son to grandson for generation after generation."
Lingle purchased Prince of Malpas because, he said, "He had a lot of character. He had the attitude of a bull...Prince had scale, too, which he got from the Pride family, together with a lot of length. He was one of those bulls with extra rib. He was well-balanced and had a world of handling quality with a good coat and good flesh covering; and he had big feet that let him walk out like a horse."
